Lena Dunham tells Spanish magazine Tentaciones after they airbrushed an image of her: ‘If you’re into what I do, why not be honest with your readers?’ Photograph: Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic
Lena Dunham has criticised a Spanish magazine for using “mad Photoshop” on its cover image of her and appealed for it to be honest with its readers.
The latest issue of Tentaciones (Temptations), a monthly supplement with Spain’s highest-circulation newspaper El País, features an image of Dunham styled in an homage to the British model Twiggy.
It was taken by the Colombian-born photographer Ruven Afanador and first appeared in Entertainment Weekly in 2012.
In a post to Instagram, where she has 2.4m followers, Dunham said the image, as it appeared on the cover of Tentaciones, had been airbrushed and did not reflect “what my body has ever looked like or will ever look like”.
“Oh hello Spanish magazine Tentaciones! I am genuinely honored to be on your cover and so happy you used a pic by @ruvenafanador – he always makes me feel gorgeous,” she captioned the image.
“But this is not what my body has ever looked like or will ever look like – mad photoshop has been done to this iteration. So if you’re into what I do, why not be honest with your readers?
“Much love, Lena.”
The post had received more than 19,200 likes within an hour of it having been posted on Monday night.
The Spanish media conglomerate Prisa, which owns El País, and the photographer Afanador have both been contacted for comment.
Earlier, Dunham had posted a selfie of her wearing a shearling jacket, round glasses with a wood-grain frame and a baseball cap reading “MAKE BROOKLYN GREAT AGAIN” with the caption, “As I grow older I become more comfortable with who I am”.
